Yoga in its many forms has become a very popular way of exercising in the last several years. In Portland alone there are at least 4 places where yoga classes are held on a regular basis. The roots of yoga practice go back to India many years ago. For most westerners, the practice of yoga is mainly asanas, or poses, but yoga is much more than poses. When practiced consistently, it can help with breathing, relaxation, meditation, and over-all well-being. B.K.S. Iyengar is one Indian practitioner who has been the inspiration for many of the classes currently being held in the Portland area. The classes are geared towards Americans who have not grown up being able to sit on the floor comfortably for extended periods of time. Wonderful “props” such as bolsters, belts, blocks, and blankets are used so that the poses can be done more easily and with little risk of injury to the body. All the studios in Portland recommend that you start with a beginner class so that you can be introduced to the simpler poses first, and some time will be spent on the history of yoga, and why it speaks to so many people in our society at this time.
The regular practice of yoga will help to build strength and flexibility into your body. You will also feel more relaxed and able to deal with the stresses of every day life. There are many books and videos about yoga practice, but part of the benefit of yoga is being able to draw on the energy of the group you practice with. Books, magazines, and videos are good resources, but we strongly recommend taking a class at first so that the instructor can give you help with body alignment and help you avoid injuries.
